In July 2013, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b_zAAPLEWFQ\">St Jouin Bruneval,<\/a>\u00a0Normandy,\u00a0<em>an estimated 30,000 tons of rock split from the 50-meter-high cliffs near the French city of Le Havre and plunged onto the public beach below.\u00a0<\/em>In June 2016, huge waves and king tides eroded about 50 meters of the Narrabeen and Collaroy beaches in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/national\/is-the-australian-dream-of-a-beachfront-home-really-worth-it\/news-story\/37842853b935d2e78faa4d4f7deb2ff2\">Sydney,<\/a>\u00a0Australia badly damaging waterfront properties and putting them at risk of toppling into the sea. This October, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-4629238\/Second-cliff-collapses-East-Sussex.html\">East-Sussex,<\/a>\u00a0England, thousands of tons of chalk crumbled away from the Seven Sisters cliffs at Birling Gap, followed a few days later by another large cliff fall at Seaford Head.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Answers<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Urgently Needed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Researchers studying this erosion of coastal cliffs in Normandy needed to capture images of these hard-to-reach and unsafe landscapes. The operational challenges included strong winds, limi-ted time windows with optimal lighting, and safety concerns due to operating in an urban environment, which deman-ded high positioning accuracy. They turned to\u00a0<a href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/broothae\/AppData\/Local\/Microsoft\/Windows\/INetCache\/Content.Outlook\/M04MTRCR\/altigator.com\">AltiGator<\/a>, who equipped their\u00a0<a href=\"file:\/\/\/C:\/Users\/broothae\/AppData\/Local\/Microsoft\/Windows\/INetCache\/Content.Outlook\/M04MTRCR\/onyxstar.net\">OnyxStar XENA<\/a>\u00a0drone (UAV) with a Septentrio high-accuracy GNSS receiver and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sony.com\/\">Sony<\/a>\u00a0digital camera, to create the ideal airborne platform capable of collecting excellent results.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.septentrio.com\/en\/insights\/predicting-crumbling-cliffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Read more&#8230;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cliff\u00a0Erosion: a Global Issue In 2012,\u00a0nine homes in\u00a0Happisburgh,\u00a0an historic village on England\u2019s Norfolk coast, had to be knocked down\u00a0after the road on which they were built, started to crumble away into the sea.
