{"id":1355,"date":"2019-09-27T12:15:59","date_gmt":"2019-09-27T19:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/palebluedotllc.com\/?p=1355"},"modified":"2019-09-27T12:17:29","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T19:17:29","slug":"nasas-eyes-on-mars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/palebluedotllc.com\/?p=1355","title":{"rendered":"NASA\u2019s Eyes on Mars"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>An old imaging technology is outdated for use on Earth, but it\u2019s the perfect fit for today\u2019s remote-sensing needs on Mars.<\/h2>\n<p>Since 1960, at the dawn of the space age, humankind has launched dozens of missions to Mars, from brief flybys to orbiters that traveled around the Red Planet for years.\u00a0On five of NASA\u2019s missions there\u2014in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and the current InSight mission\u2014the imaging sensors on its cameras were made by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teledynedalsa.com\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teledyne DALSA<\/a>, a Canadian manufacturer of digital imaging sensors and semiconductors, in collaboration with NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/insight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">InSight<\/a>\u2014short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy, and Heat Transport\u2014launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California in May 2018. Six months later, it landed in a sand-filled crater on Mars\u2019 Elysium Planitia, or equatorial plain, and immediately began surface operations, sending photographs back to Earth.<\/p>\n<p>The cameras on the InSight lander will help scientists and engineers choose where to place instruments on the surface of Mars; these instruments will help them study the interior of Mars to \u201canswer key questions about the early formation of rocky planets in our inner solar system\u2014Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars\u2014more than 4 billion years ago,\u201d according to the official mission website.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.xyht.com\/space\/nasas-eyes-on-mars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Read more&#8230;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An old imaging technology is outdated for use on Earth, but it\u2019s the perfect fit for today\u2019s remote-sensing needs on Mars.
